Midges dominating all sections—Black Beauty #18-22, Zebra Midge #16-20, RS2 gray #18-22. Juju Baetis #18-20 effective in the Gorge. Small Scuds #14-16 producing in the upper section. Mini Leeches black/olive #10-12 for subsurface streamer work. Surface feeders are spooky—12-14ft leaders with 6x tippet for any dry fly presentations.
Nymph rig: Zebra Midge #18-20 + Juju Baetis #18-20, or Black Beauty #18-22 trailing a small Scud #14-16. Streamers: Mini Leech black/olive #10-12 with slow retrieve.
300-600 CFS ideal for wade fishing. Drift boat conditions moderate above 450 CFS, easy above 800 CFS. Lower flows require rafts or pontoons.
42-58°F year-round in tailwater sections. Dam releases keep temps stable—no thermal stress concerns.
Multiple sections with different characters. Upper Gunnison running 520 CFS, Gorge at 1,100 CFS, Lower at 1,950 CFS. All sections low and stable for winter. Fish concentrated in deep runs, walking-speed seams, and canyon tailouts.
Super clear through the Gorge section. Upper sections also clear at current low flows. No turbidity issues.
Technically a tailwater but fishes like a freestone with prolific hatches. The Gorge section within Black Canyon National Park offers trophy potential. Wade access opens up at lower flows (under 400 CFS).
spring
March through May sees excellent fishing before flows increase. Midges and BWOs dominate. Stonefly nymphs become effective as water warms.
summer
Flows typically peak late May to early June. Post-runoff brings caddis, PMDs, and Golden Stones. The Gorge fishes well all summer due to cold dam releases.
fall
September through November is prime time. Browns get aggressive in the Gorge. Streamers produce trophy fish. BWOs provide consistent dry fly action.
winter
Stable winter flows—520 CFS upper, 1,100 CFS Gorge, 1,950 CFS lower. Fish hold in deep runs, soft inside seams, and slow tailouts. Midges dominate all sections. Best window 11am-3pm. Gorge access via Chukar, Bobcat, Duncan, and Ute trails (4WD needed for trailheads). East Portal road closed for winter.
