Indicator nymph rig: Pat's Rubberlegs (#4-8) + Clown Egg or Micro Spawn (Shrimp Pink). Alt: swing Intruders or String Leeches low and slow on sink-tips.
Currently ~2,840 CFS at Orleans—slightly above the ideal 1,500-2,500 CFS window but still very fishable. After five dry weeks, rain is forecast which could push flows higher. Above 4,000 CFS fish move upriver fast and fishing gets tough.
Water temps in the low-to-mid 40s°F typical for early February. Cold but productive for steelhead. Nymphing outperforms swinging in these temps.
Post-dam-removal river still adjusting. Recent storms pushed flows and color through the system but it has settled. Rain forecast for mid-February could spike flows again—watch forecasts closely.
About 3 feet of visibility at the lower end currently. River carries a natural dark tea-colored tint year-round. After storms, it typically clears in just a few days. Upper sections near former Iron Gate Dam site still running more turbid from sediment.
Primarily a steelhead fishery with fish arriving August through February. Most are 'half-pounders' (2-4 lbs) with larger fish mixed in. Best fishing when flows at Orleans are around 2,500 CFS or below with 3+ feet of visibility.
spring
March through May sees late-run steelhead and resident trout. Flows typically moderate. Stonefly nymphs and streamers produce.
summer
Early steelhead arrive in July-August. Lower river heats up—fish move upriver. Traditional summer steelhead fishing begins mid-August to mid-September.
fall
Prime steelhead season September through November. Fish continue arriving through fall rains. Swung flies and nymphs both effective. This is peak time.
winter
December through February is prime upper-river steelhead fishing. Fish stack up from the former Iron Gate Dam site down to I-5. Indicator nymphing with eggs and stoneflies is the most productive winter method. Half-pounders (16-20") mixed with adults averaging 4-5 lbs, fish to 10 lbs possible. Check flows carefully after rain events.
