Sparse winter midge activity on sunny afternoons. Streamers and nymphs are the primary producers. Focus on slower water and deep runs.
Streamer (Woolly Bugger, Slumpbuster) or nymph rig (Stonefly + Midge)
400-1,000 CFS ideal for wade fishing. 1,000-3,000 CFS floatable. Above 3,000 CFS during runoff limits fishing to bank edges.
45-58°F optimal. Teton snowmelt keeps water cold—rarely thermal stress concerns.
Freestone character with dramatic seasonal swings. Winter flows run 800-1,200 CFS. Spring runoff peaks mid-June, often exceeding 10,000 CFS. Fishable again by early July.
Variable with weather and tributaries. Watch Gros Ventre and Hoback contributions. Clears quickly after runoff due to cold mountain origins.
Fishable when flows drop below 3,000 CFS with reasonable visibility. The Snake through Jackson Hole offers world-class cutthroat fishing with stunning Teton views. Float fishing is king here.
spring
Pre-runoff (April-May) offers good nymphing and early streamer fishing. Runoff hits hard mid-May and can blow out the river through June. Watch snowpack forecasts.
summer
Post-runoff (early July) kicks off prime season. PMDs, caddis, and terrestrials produce well. Float fishing becomes ideal. Hopper-dropper is deadly August through September.
fall
September through October is exceptional. Browns get aggressive, cutthroats feed heavily before winter. Streamers produce trophy fish. Crowds thin after Labor Day.
winter
Low, clear flows make for technical fishing. Fish concentrate in slower water. Streamer and nymph fishing from a drift boat covers water effectively. Cold but productive.
