Midges (#18–22 Zebra Midge, CopperHead Midge in rust/olive/black) hatching consistently. Sowbugs and scuds (#18–20, grey/tan) remain productive subsurface. Fish deep with tungsten beads—trout are holding in steady seams and tailouts. Low generation windows best for wading and sight fishing.

Tungsten Zebra Midge #18 + Scud #18–20 dropper, 4–6 ft below indicator. Switch to Sculpin streamers (Sparkle Minnow, Sculpzilla #6–8) during generation pulses.

Quick Reference
Fishable Flow Range

700 CFS minimum flow to ~9,000 CFS (nearly 3 units). Generation has been variable—typically 2–5 hours of 2-unit releases starting around 7 a.m. Wade safely at minimum flow; float at 2+ units.

Optimal Temperature

44–50°F near the dam, warming slightly downstream. Cold nights keeping temps suppressed; afternoon warming provides brief windows of increased activity.

Trend Notes

Bull Shoals Lake at ~659 ft MSL, roughly 7 ft below normal power pool. Generation schedule has been erratic—check SWPA projections after 5 p.m. or call 866-494-1993 for next-day schedules.

Clarity

Excellent clarity at present. Snowmelt feeding the system but not muddying flows. Generation pulses not affecting visibility.

What "Fishable" Means Here

Fishable year-round but generation schedules dictate method. Wade during low generation (0-2 units). Float during moderate generation (3-5 units). High generation (6-8 units) requires boat and experienced oarsmen.

Seasonal Patterns

Excellent fishing March through May. Sowbugs, scuds, and midges dominate. Watch for shad kills that trigger aggressive streamer fishing. Generation patterns vary.

Consistent fishing despite heat. Tailwater temps stay cold. Early morning low-generation windows are best for wading. Streamers effective during pulses.

October through November sees excellent conditions. Browns get aggressive. Streamers produce trophy fish. Generation often more predictable as lake levels stabilize.

Mid-winter fishing remains productive. Target low-generation mornings for wade access in the Dam-to-Wildcat Shoals and Rim Shoals stretches. Midges (#18–22), sowbugs, and scuds (#18–20) are the staples. Jig minnow and worm patterns producing on browns. 1/8-oz jigs in white or olive/ginger effective during low water. Streamers (Sculpzilla, Sparkle Minnow) best during generation pulses.
